Dr. Joseph M. Morris was born and raised in Southern California. After earning his Bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University he headed north to earn Master’s degrees and a doctorate in American politics, environmental policy, and public administration from Idaho State University. He has served on the faculty at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania since 2001 and is presently the chair of the Political Science Department.
In 2010 Dr. Morris founded the Mercyhurst Center for Applied Politics which included a computer-assisted telephone interviewing facility devoted to accurately measuring public opinion on elections and public policy. The results of his polls were reported by local, region, national, and international news organizations including CNN, NBC, and Fox News.
Dr. Morris uses knowledge, skills, and experience to help his students and the public to better understand the challenge of democracy. In addition to classroom teaching, Dr. Morris educates the public by providing analysis of politics, society for local, regional, national, and international news organizations including the BBC, NBC, CNBC, ABC’s Matter of Fact, C-SPAN, Christian Broadcast Network, New York Times, and many others. He is a regular contributor to WICU and WJET’s political reporting.
In a desire to further contribute to his community and the democratic process, Dr. Morris is hosting About that Election™ a docu series which offers voters the opportunity to share their perspective on politics with others. The initial guests reside in what US News and World Report identified as “perhaps America’s swingiest county,” Erie County, Pennsylvania. Importantly, the series offers an opportunity to understand why voters see the 2024 election the way they see it.
Dr. Morris resides in Erie, Pennsylvania with his wife, Dr. Leanne M. Roberts, creator of About That Election,™ two children, a dog named Sparky, and three fish. He’s an avid cyclist, lover of Mexican food, and an outdoor enthusiast.
